Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
They enhance it by giving us more detail and drawing us in!. Some ( ex alliteration ) make the poem flow better, they allow for a change of pace, some make the poem more memorable or reinforce certain theme (for example rhymed lines are easier to recollect ) !. Some draw to what we naturally think of when mentioned the subject ( Ex, sun as gold, sea as blue ) , the personification generally makes it more interesting and makes the reader think!. Symbolism is also like an added depth to the poem!. None of these are essential and often many are not necessary,it is up to the poet to decide which and when to include!. A poem can be bad and still be full of such devices!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think some of the best poems don't have any of those, that's just what the teachers want their students to write and read!. But metaphors and personification do add depth to the poem, giving it more vivid images and makes it more interesting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
