From the field, Cornplanter could hear
the children laughing as Sandal Walker
told them the story of the bear and the bee!.
Cornplanter was very proud of Sandal
Walker!. She had worked hard to
become Teacher!. She loved the tribal
legends and customs, and was careful
about every detail!.
As he sewed the seeds, Cornplanter
thought back to his first days as Teacher!.
He remembered Tall Trees, who was
Teacher before him!. He remembered
how Tall Trees’ long arms and legs
could reach out like oaken branches!.
He could make shadows that looked
like storks and magpies…
