A Red, Red Rose [simile: my loved one is like a rose]

by Robert Burns

My love is like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in June :
My love is like the melody
That’s sweetly played in tune!.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in love am I :
And I will love thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry!.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun :
And I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run!.

And fare thee weel, my only love,
And fare thee weel a while !
And I will come again, my love,
Thou’ it were ten thousand mile!.

Personification in a prose poem by Arthur Rimbaud!. This is the preface to "A Season in Hell" Beauty is a woman = personification!.]

Long past, if I remember well, my life was a party where all hearts were open, where all wines flowed!.

One evening, I seated Beauty on my knees!.—And I found her bitter!.—And I reviled her!.

I took arms against righteousness!.

I took flight!. O witches, misery, hatred, my treasure was entrusted to you!

I managed to clear my spirit of all human hope!. To strangle every joy, I pounced on it like a savage beast, stealthily!.

I called on firing squads in order to bite the butts of their guns while dying!. I called for plagues in order to gag myself on blood, on sand!. Disaster was my god!. I wallowed in the gutter!. I dried myself in the criminal breeze!. And I played some fine tricks madly, passionately!.

And springtime brought me the idiot’s horrific laughter!.

Now, suddenly finding myself at the point of producing my ultimate croak! I had a dream of searching for the key to the ancient feast, where I might recover my appetite!.

Compassion is that key!.—This insight is proof that I was dreaming!

“You’re stuck being a hyena, etc!.” !. !. !. protests the demon who’d crowned me in such lovely poppies!. “Seize death with all your appetites, and your egotism and every deadly sin!.”

Ahh! I’ve had it up to here:—But, my dear Satan, I conjure you, an eye less angry! and while awaiting a few belated little acts of cowardice, you who love a lack of descriptive or instructive talent in a writer, for you I rip loose these few hideous pages out of my diary of the damned!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
