Ask a teacher or librarian you trust to recommend a good anthology!. That way, you can sample lots of poets and see which ones interest and inspire you!. Then you can look for books by those writers who've touched you in some way!.

also, you can check out some online poetry zines!. They publish lots of different poets who write in lots of different styles, so once again you'll have quite a variety to choose from!. To get you started, here are links to just a few of the many good available e-zines:

Well, I don't know what you like!.
There's the new translation of Beowulf by Seamus Heaney if you like epic poetry!. It's quite good!.
Emily Dickinson's poetry, and "A Shropshire Lad" by A!. E!. Housman, are lyrical, simple seeming, and with a surprising amount of depression, though it's not depressing to read them!.
T!.S!. Elliot's poetry is both spiritual and contemporary (almost), with a sense of society's malaise!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Everyone should read Shakespeare -- not all of the plays at one time; but definitely some of the sonnets!. They linger -- not just because they were written so long ago, but because there are emotions and drama and you can feel what he says!.

One of my favorite writers is Kahlil Gibran -- go for The Prophet first!. It is masterful!.

Stop at a bookstore and read some of the children's books -- they are much deeper than they first appear!.

Rod McKuen, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney -- all have wonderful ways with words!. Read the lyrics books; also the lyrics of other group's music!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Okay, trust me on this: Billy Collins

He was poet laureate of the United States and writes very accessible poetry, very funny, very very good!. A personal favorite of my is also Theodore Roethke, if you like poetry that is a little wordy!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
