I am not sure what the author and the title of the poem is, nor do I know the name of the book!. I DO remember that the book has a b&w picture of a bed and is black on the front!. If you know this, it would REALLY help me, my poety project is due tomorrow, and thanks to my friend, she erased these things on the project!. On the page containing this poem, there is a sepia or b&w picture of a little dirt grave (dirt coming above ground) and on top sits a china plate!. Thanks!
Poem:
It was customary to decorate
a child’s grave with something pretty
from the house
and a china plate
was as pretty as they had,
though it gave them
not one bit of solace,
and they worried
late in the evening
some dog or somebody
had come along
and tipped it over,
making their boy’s grave
look a foolish thing
and it wasn’t!.
