Years ago, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day!.
Families would go to the cemeteries and place flowers on graves!. Our next door neighbor, very old by my reckoning as a child, did not drive!. Thus, we would take her every Decoration Day, to our small, town cemetery!. I accompanied them, since I was in charge of the flowers!.

Ever so cautiously, with her cane making dimples in the soft grass, she would (and it never varied) go firstly to the grave of her parents!. Then to her late husband’s plot, he’d died in WWI, I was informed!. Next to the graves of her son and daughter, who had predeceased her!.

Never a tear, nor anguish, could I discern on her face!.
When we reached the last site, she and my mother would sit…
on a stone bench, which some gentle soul had kindly placed there!. While they rested, I occupied myself kneeling in the grass, looking for four-leafed clovers!. I found one! On my knees, I ‘walked’ over and offered it to her!. She held out her hand, and enclosed my offering!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
