It depends on the type of sonnet you are writing!. It wouldn't be completely accurate to say 10 syllables, because in English Sonnet writing, they are written in iambic pentameter, which is ten syllables, but it's not just any syllables, they have to be in rhythm!.

da-DA-da-DA-da-DA-da-DA-da-DA!.
And the rhymes are ABAB/CDCD/EFEF/GG for each stanza!.

The Wikipedia article on sonnets will give you more info

But if the poem isnt naturally coming out in sonnet, don't force it that way or it'll sound like crap!. don't be afraid of free form!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The typical Shakespearean (English) Sonnet is 14 lines long!. It has three 4-line stanzas and finishes with a 2-line stanza called a "couplet!."

The lines must be written in iambic pentameter!.

"I am a man who sails the sea for tea!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are many forms of sonnets, each with it own rhyme scheme that must be followed strictly!. What makes a sonnet a sonnet is the rhyme scheme and the 10 syllable lines!.
