Drugs do not give you creativity - they just make you think they do!. I believe Aldous Huxley once wrote "experience is not what happens to you, it is what you do with what happens to you!." Poetic imagination - is probably a function of your genes - it takes talent - and your life experiences, not a product of the use of any drug!. Poetry also takes discipline and order - I see this in the meter and pulse of the poetry!. Drugs do not nurture any kind of order!. As to the suggestion of which to choose - coffee - for me - is a killer !!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think you're missing something here!. Rather than looking at the drugs they imbibed, you need to look at their life experiences!. People become really creative when either they are really high on life (excited and involved in something beyond explanation) or whether they are so low, they are near death!. AKA experiencing a bad case of the blues!. In most instances, I would have to say that those who are depressed turned to drugs/alcohol and thus came out as being able to write some REALLY good stuff!. But trust me, it wasn't the drugs or the alcohol that provoked them to think the way they did!. You need to become tangled up in some major experience in order to write about it!. My best writing came from those experiences!.!.!.!.!. not the ho hum ordinaries of everyday life!. However, there is always the exception whereby some poets are talented enough to turn those ho hum everyday ordinary experiences into something that makes you think!. So!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!. get on with it!.!.!.!.!. be adventuresome in your life!.!.!.!.!. find a love!.!.!.!.!. lose a love!.!.!.!.!.!. struggle!.!.!.!.!.!. get depressed!.!.!.!.!.!. become elated!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!. and ALL of those great feelings will allow you to put them into great words like the great poets!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If your goal is to be great poet, then you will never be one!. If you make your goal to write the best poetry that you can, then you might end up being a great poet!.

You're interested in becoming a poet because most of them had cool drugs!. I'm guessing that you might jump off a cliff, if most cliff jumpers had cool drugs!. Why in the world would you want to be associated with drugs!? They will screw up your life!.

This question sounds like a short term flight of fancy to me, rather than planning for the lifetime of hard work that it would require to become a great poet!.

"Sober" generally means "not currently under the influence of alcohol (or other drugs)"!. By this measure, lots of poets have written their best work cold sober--and if they did have a buzz on while they wrote a first draft or two, I strongly suspect they revised when they were clearheaded!.

If you're asking if any poets were total abstainers, I don't know of any, but if there were, they probably had other problems!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle dabbled in cocaine!. Jack Kerouac wrote "On the Road" while high on a type of methamphetamine!. Edgar Allen Poe was a drinker!.

I have tried all of these although I am not a creative person!. But to tell you the truth, I only had one good high and that was on marijuana!. I have since moved on to being totally clean!.
