Question: There has been a lot of talk lately about what IS and IS NOT a poem!. Here is one to chew on!. Poem—YES—NO—!?
“All stop!” bellows the boss!.
“Aye Cap’n!’ I calls!.
I slows us, as ordered!.
The old man leans over the rail, eyeing the dingy what has come along side!.
“A’vast there! A’r ye friend or foe!?”
A timid voice beckons from below!.
“I needs help with me homework, kind SIr!.”
Me Cap’n’s blood boils!.
“Man the 5 pounder! We’ll have this one with our tea!”
Me knows he don’t means it, but me dances around Brown Brigit, pretend-making ready to fire!. She’s an old French gun we captured from St!. Vincent’s Middle School!.
“Gun ready!” I shouts!.
“Pease, good Cap’n, do not shoot upon me!. It’s Shakespeare what has me scratching me ‘ed!.”
The old salty tears well up in him!. He’s not a bad man, just been on the sea a very long while!. He hollers down to the lad, “Is it the Tempest then!?”
“Aye, Sir, the harpy Ariel!.”
The Cap’n calls to all!.
“Look lively, men!. We’re hoisting a dingy!”Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm not a poet!. I am an artist!. As are you painting that lovely movie in my mind!.

Hmm, poetry - individual imagery of thoughts and feelings taking on many forms I know nothing about , just learning --- ahem, *adjusting humility* -- you not only wrote a video in my mind (versus the usual "painting" image a poem gives me) but included The Bard himself in prose *eek!?* similar to his sonnets!.

Being an artist, not a poet, seemed pure poetry in prose to me!. *humble bow*

I really don't know what makes a Poem a Poem, I have to think it is in the eye of the beholder, but maybe that is my ignorance!.

Fun story!. I think one characteristic of a poem is that each line should at least try to stand up by itself!. This is prose!. Well, whimsey (!?)!. The naval flavor makes for great imagery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Poem is in the read/heart of the beholder!?

I am far from a master, if words touch my heart, make my soul
leap, turn on a light bulb or I can relate to the same feeling,
affirm what I choose to believe yet struggle with the feeling,
lift me up to laughter, or bring a tear, if it flows and sings,
whatever it is called in any form, if not a poem, It is a blessing!.

Thanxs for the read of this blessing!Www@QuestionHome@Com

You could make a case for it being a poem in the sense that it's a dramatic narrative!. From a subjective sense it doesn't strike me as exceptionally poetic, but my mind tends to compartmentalize what I read (i!.e!., poem, play, novel, short story, etc)!. There are some story-like poems that I've read that have been 8-9 pages long that have given me difficulty defining but in the end I concluded: Poem!.

For me it's sort of subjective: This just says fun dialogue to me!.

But as you can see from the answers opinions differ, this was just mine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
