Are you writing a five-paragraph essay or a one page critique!? Here are some tips for both:

1) You can focus on one aspect of the poem!. Imagery, choice of words, theme, metaphor & simile!.!.!. your teacher has probably gone over these in class!. Then, you find examples of these devices within the poem, and describe how each contributes to your thesis!.

2) Try 3 or more poetic devices to study!. There are two ways to do this: 1) study one device in depth in each of three paragraphs; and 2) Go through the poem and classify each idea as it reflects these devices!. Some ideas may fit more than one bill!.
