I'll have to disagree especially with the first answer here!. Theme is distinct from story!. The story refers to what happens: for example, in this poem a flower opens!. The theme refers to the broader and more abstract significance of the story: for example, the opening flower suggests a poem whose theme is renewed life!. More generally, theme refers to the set of concerns or ideas communicated by a literary work, rather than the "action" or events in that work!.
