The Greek poet Pindar (c522-443 B!. C!.) wrote many odes about Olympic athletes!. Here's a link to one of them: http://216!.71!.135!.198/HW/pindar!.html

A much more modern poet, A!. E Housman (1859-1936), wrote a shorter poem, "To an Athlete Dying Young," which is sometimes read at appropriate funerals: http://www!.amherst!.edu/~rjyanco94/litera!.!.!.
