Question:Easter Wings
by George Herbert

Lord, Who createdst man in wealth and store,
Though foolishly he lost the same,
Decaying more and more,
Till he became
Most poore:

With Thee
O let me rise,
As larks, harmoniously,
And sing this day Thy victories:
Then shall the fall further the flight in me.

My tender age in sorrow did beginne;
And still with sicknesses and shame
Thou didst so punish sinne,
That I became
Most thinne.

With Thee
Let me combine,
And feel this day Thy victorie;
For, if I imp my wing on Thine,
Affliction shall advance the flight in me.

The first stanza explains the situation...that God created man with health, intelligence and purpose. He was placed in a garden that produced everything he needed. He was rich. However, he lost it because of his disobedience by eating of the tree that God said not to eat from. Adam lived to be 900+ years old, but as the generations progressed man's life span became less and less. He lost his health, the land no longer produced but now had to be tilled and worked by hard labor. He lost the fellowship with his creator. He became poor.

The second stanza...a desire to know God again. George explains the spiritual flight of communing with God.

The third stanza...describes his sickness. He realizes that because sin entered this world and he suffers from the effects.

Fourth stanza...desire to die. His sickness is terminal and with his death he with be with God. He will fly up to heaven...a victory won by Jesus' death and resurrection.

I like this poem a lot. Hope I was able to help you understand it.
