Position:Home>Poetry> I NEED HELP!!!!! can someone plz analyze this poem for me???

Question:i need help figuring out this poem... its reALLY confusing and i SUCK at poetry
i also need 2 find 2 more poems about human rights and write my own poem if anyone wantts 2 help.. but anyways heres the poem i need help with.

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends
and dips his wing in the orange suns rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage
can seldom see through his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

this poem is talking about.. Prejudice,
Discrimination, Racism, Fight for Freedom, Longing for freedom, Human
rights. "his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing." that line I think is a refrence to slavery. The free bird lives a
life of ignorance towards its freedom, simply dreaming and drifting without
any cares at all. The caged bird lives a desolate life, trapped within its
iron prison. The caged bird “stands on the grave
of dreams…his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream” His dreams of freedom
are lost . This convinces the reader that a bird should not live without freedom. Both of these birds are the same creature however, so both should live with freedom. The poem is using birds to represent the life of a person without freedom.

this poem is basically saying that a free bird is able to do what it wants and the caged bird isnt able to spread its wings and fly. the free bird, not having clipped wings, can fly where it wants to with no fears of dying in a cage. on the other hand, the caged bird, having clipped wings, is incapable of flying and thus being tied down. the only thing the caged bird has is to sing so he can be heard as a way of his only freedom... i hope this helps, it is my own opinion and maybe you can see what im talking about...

Oppression and freedom. The cage is a metaphor for oppression in whatever form from jail to despots. Even caged the bird (human) is still able to trill (speak) and long for better.
