Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, Phillis Wheatley, Countee Cullen... the list goes on and on. Google the Harlem Renaissance, you'll find more than enough.

Al Young. He is a more recent poet, and by recent I mean he's not dead yet.

Langston Hughes is not only the best African American Poets, he is one of the greatest American poets of all time.

I would definitely say Maya Angelou.
