Question: What were Descartes basic convictions!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
1!. God exists!. He sacrafices much of his argument to make sure this is proved!.
2!. The world is ultimately rational and non-ambiguous (which to Descartes means self-identical)
3!. The self which thinks is absolutely self-certain and the starting place for any philosophy!. The thinking thing is a different substance than the "extended" matter!. Thought, for D, is not spatial nor can it be limited by spatial objects!. Likewise Objects are extended in space, but they lack the capacity to think!.
4!. The only reason that self-certainty exists is because God exists!. We can only be certain on the world because God, being infinitely Good, would not deceive us by making the whole world a false delusion!.

Of course there is more, but this is the typical highlights of Descartes Meditations!. You should read these sometime, seeing that they are short and actually pleasurable to read!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Descartes said "I think therefore I am"
Basically he meant that he couldn't prove anything around him was actually real apart from himself, and the only reason he knew that was that he was thinking!.

And there's a whole lot of other **** as well!. But that's the basic!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
