Question: Could you imagine living with NO Conscience!? I have too big of one Myself thats the problem!!!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
there is no such thing as too big of a conscience!. that is what makes you a good person!. it makes you want to do the best you can!. it makes you care!.
people with no consciences are always in trouble, never happy because they keep wanting to come up with ways to get (read steal) from others and they eventually get found out!. if they steal or abuse others, they eventually get caught!.
having a conscience is special!. it is something all people should have but those who really do usually turn out the best!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Id rather be too conservative than too liberal!. Id rather be too inhibited than too liberated!.

Its an easy decision to make!.

Having a conscience or having morals doesnt stop you from having fun or living your life!. All it does it ensures you make the best decisions for your future, without detriment to ones self or to others!.

Detriment isnt just a measure of physical harm and inconvenience!.!.!. but has spiritual implication, too

When I die, Id rather be remembered for being good!. Not that I didnt do the things I wanted, not that I held myself back!.!.!.!. but rather that no one has anything bad to say about how I was!. I want to have set a good example for posterity!.

Whether you subscribe to religion or not, morality has a real implication!.

In terms of religion, however, Id rather liver conservatively!.!.!. and earn a place in a good, happy afterlife!. If an afterlife doesnt exist!.!.!. then life doenst matter and I wont carry any memories anyway!.!.!. so why live for pleasure, hedonism, and do potentially evil things at all!? Whats the point!? Sure, if you dont believe in an afterlife then there arent any moral consequences after death!.!.!. but even so, why act at all!? When you die, you cease to exist!.!.!. and all the wrongs you did in life, no matter how self-serving, are wiped from your existence!.!.!.!. and the only consequences that are felt are felt by the living!.

Can I imagine living without a conscience!? No!. Without conscience we are little more than animals!. And deserve no better!.

It is our intelligence, our memories, the intellectual capacity that sets us apart from the animal kingdom that also awards us the capacity to override instinct and animal impulse, and make a thought out decision, appreciating and empathizing with consequence!.

Our society is of the mentality that "If it hasnt been proven to be objectively immoral, then its not immoral at all, and should be embraced liberally until proof of immorality arises!." (I site abortion, for example!. The idea there is that "we have no reason to believe fetuses have souls, so killing them is alright", "we have no reason to believe they are people worthy of the right to life, therefore abortion is justifiable", "we have no idea when true sentient life begins, so lets not be too restrictive about abortion")!.

I am, however, of the mentality that "If it hasnt been proven to be objectively moral, it should be assumed to be immoral and approached conservatively and cautiously!."

I would rather default to the opinion, position, action!.!.!. that is most morally conservative, then risk potentially doing an evil I am ignorant of!.

Regardless of how moral or immoral an act may truly be, intrinsically!.!.!. the choice to act when the moral implication is known to be unknown is the greater evil in the end!. When we know it "could be" immoral, but chose to neglect that possibility simply because sufficient proof fails to exist, and the act is more self-serving!.!.!. then we are indeed in the greater wrong!.

I wrote an article a while back on "moral defaults under moral uncertainty," where I criticized our society for making decisions they way they do!. I argued that uncertainty in the moral implications of a controversial topic should not have a liberal default position!.

(Again, I site abortion!. The controversy is stalemated, is it not!? No side is decided, no side has proof!.!.!. and yet through it all, one side is granted permission and has effectively won, simply by maintaining stalemate and never proving their position!. And what if one day we find out once and for all that abortion is an evil act!? We would have years and years of condoned wrongs!.!.!. murders!.!.!. that served no one but the convenience of a single woman!. And what if we find out that abortion is moral after all!? Would a history of forcing pregnancy, a mere nine-month inconvenience, after which an unwanting mother adopted or fostered their child,!.!.!. would that -really- be the greater sin!? Either way there exists an immoral component, but the question is which is the greater wrong: infringing a womans rights to sovereignty for a few months or killing a baby and infringing its rights to life!? In hindsight, Id rather our society have defaulted to a position that was less questionable and be wrong, than more questionable at the time but be right!. The reverse argument is not true, though!.!.!. we cannot be expected to know the future or what future revelations will bring!. All we can be faulted or praised for is how we act based on what we know now!. And Im sure anyone would agree to preserving life being greater than preserving unrestricted and unconditional liberty!.!.!. all I am doing is weighing the moralities not of an act itself, but of our choices to perform said acts in moral ignorance!.!.!. so my position on abortion itself is irrelevant to the conclusions of this argument!.)

We chose to be ignorant of immoralities, and we chose not to pursue objective moral truths, and we chose to promote moral subjectivity!.!.!. because under that mentality, any action can be rationalized!.

Generally speaking, our society doesnt hold people at fault for evils done in ignorance!. But when the potential for evilness exists and is recognized, and ignorance becomes a choice to rationalize a self-serving default!.!.!. then does that still free you of moral consequence!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I could never imagine living without a conscience!. If people didn't have a conscience, where would be the feeling of guilt!? Where would be that weird feeling you get before you go to bed, knowing you did something wrong!? Something right!?
No conscience = No regret = End of the world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If I had no conscience I would hurt all the people I love!. I think without a conscience we would not know the value of our lives!. Rape, Pillage, slaughter, cause pain!.!.!. all to no gain!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
