Yep, death is pretty final, at least until they get that whole cryonics thing perfected!. I've gotta disagree with the first answerer, consciousness is NOT a form of energy!. It is the "program" running on the neural net that is your brain!. Your brain's the hardware, your consciousness is the software!. We know this because any changes in one results in changes to the other!. If you get drunk or suffer a stroke or other brain damage, these physical changes directly affect your consciousness!. Similarly when you learn or remember something, that process is a re-wiring of some of the neurons in your brain to form new connections which embed that memory, knowledge or experience!.

If consciousness were somehow separate from our physical brains, then our brains are as useless to us as our appendix and similarly serve no real purpose!. If our essence existed independently of our physical bodies then why do we need physical bodies!? And things like booze, drugs, or a bullet to the head shouldn't affect us at all!.

While there is still much we don't know about the human brain, we DO know quite a bit about it!. Our knowledge in just the past few decades has gone up almost exponentially, and what we do know seems to be more than enough to rule out any possibility of a separate, immaterial soul!. We know that everything about you--your personality, knowledge, talents, quirks, worldviews, experiences, tastes, etc!.--is encoded in the neural wiring of your brain!. We have used MRI scans to actually watch changes in the brain taking place during learning experiences or personality changes!. Your essence IS physically-based!. Not to sound cocky or arrogant, but there is simply no room for religion or metaphysics to disagree here!.

So the bad news is, this life is all you have!. Once you're gone, you're gone!. Rather than being a source of existential angst though, this realization should be cause for you to value and treasure your life all the more, and to make the most of it while you're still around to enjoy it!.

In a sense, we are a consciousness that's going through this journey called life in a body that's composed of flesh and blood!. We know what happens to the flesh and blood part of our being, but nobody really knows what happens to our consciousness!. I suspect!.!.!.and, no, I can't prove it to you with hard evidence!.!.!.that the energy that is our consciousness continues to exist in some form and has other experiences!. This would also be in agreement with what Einstein said about the amount of matter and energy in the universe being a constant!. It is at least possible for things to change and still exist in another form!. Whether or not this meets your definition of "essence" is a decision that you'll have to consider!. Your body and your brain are instruments which you use just as your mind is also an instrument that you use!. You recognize that these are instruments, yet they are one -- Spirit, Soul and Body: Spirit, Mind and Brain!. One is the complement of the other!.
