Question: Darwinism makes life worst case scenario!. How can we delude ourselves that anything is possible!? !?
Very little is possible in a Darwinian universe and the rate of advancement is glacial!. Why are we deluding ourselves into thinking that nature can be defeated and that technology will advance exponentially!? Nature is in charge, always will be and couldn't care less about our survival!. That all depends on the haphazardry of natural selection!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Firstly, Darwin's explanation does not tell us what is "possible" or "impossible"!. It explains the biological variegation of species!.

Secondly, your question seems to be premised on the idea that the only "change" that is worth talking about is biological change!. Two responses to that:

A) Technological change is in no way governed by natural selection!. Perhaps in some metaphorical sense, you could say that technological advancement is a result of "natural selection" in the free market or the world-of-ideas or what-have-you!. But people who speak like this should be very careful to remember that they are speaking figuratively and not literally!. Darwinian natural selection occurs because certain genes, which code for undesirable traits (i!.e!. traits that are less conducive to survival and the propagation of species) are less likely to survive and reproducte, hence those genes don't get passed on!. Over millions and billions of years, the genetic material that "survives" this process results in new species!. This clearly has no bearing on the tools that a particular species decides to use!.

If an ape figures out how to use a twig to fish termites out of a tree, then this is only a product of evolution insofar as evolution has provided the ape with sufficient cognitive ability to figure it out!. The actual tool and its use was not a product of evolution, but a product of the ape's figuring-things-out!. This easily explains why some apes fish for termites, while other groups of the same exact species do not!. One has figured things out, while the other hasn't!. The actual tool use was not evolutionary determined -- only the mental capacity to figure it out!.

B) Man is not "against" nature!. Sometimes it may seem like that, when we look at political issues like drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve!. But there is no overarching reason why "man" is in any way obliged to be "against" his own environment!. So I would point out that your phrase, "nature can be defeated," seems somewhat misleading!.

To sum up, you cannot conclude, "Nature is the boss," from the evidence provided by evolution!. Nature (through evolution) is what gave us our genetic identity as humans!. What we decide to do is up to us, individually and collectively!. There is as much of a risk, I think, of overstating the implications of Darwin's explanation, as there is of understating it!.

Fundamentalist Christians understate it!. You seem to have overstated it!. In particular, when we develop full command of genetic engineering (most bioengineers seem to estimate this happening within the next fifty years), we will essentially have control over the manipulation of genetic material, which previously required billions of years of natural selection to occur!. There is no reason to think that this is either impossible, implausible, or undesirable, and we will not have "mastered" or "defeated" nature when this happens!. Rather, we as a species will still be a product of millions of years of natural selection!. It's just that we will have "figured out" the fundamental biological processes to directly manipulate genetic information!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

>Why are we deluding ourselves into thinking that nature can be defeated and that technology will advance exponentially!?

Technology already IS advancing at an accelerating rate!. Whether it's exponential I'm not sure, but there's little doubt that it is much more than linear!.

>Nature is in charge, always will be and couldn't care less about our survival!.

That depends what you mean by 'nature'!. 10000 years ago, putting 400 people into a giant metal bird and launching them across whole continents at 800 kilometers per hour would have seemed like magic, those capable of it wouuld have been regarded as gods who had conquered the limitations of nature!. Who are we to assume that any of the limitations we see now are not of the same sort!? How can we know that, thousands of years from now, people will not move whole star systems across intergalactic space faster than the speed of light!? If there is one, just ONE lesson that history has to teach us, it is this: When people predict that technology will NOT overcome some particular limitation, they generally turn out to be wrong!. It's possible that, after each step we take, we will still see 'nature' lying unconquered ahead of us, but that is more a limitation of our vantage point at any one instant in time than a limitation of technology over eternity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

PAPER 65 - THE OVERCONTROL OF EVOLUTION

Basic evolutionary material life--premind life--is the formulation of the Master Physical Controllers and the life-impartation ministry of the Seven Master Spirits in conjunction with the active ministration of the ordained Life Carriers!. As a result of the co-ordinate function of this threefold creativity there develops organismal physical capacity for mind--material mechanisms for intelligent reaction to external environmental stimuli and, later on, to internal stimuli, influences taking origin in the organismal mind itself!.

There are, then, three distinct levels of life production and evolution:

1!. The physical-energy domain--mind-capacity production!.

2!. The mind ministry of the adjutant spirits--impinging upon spirit capacity!.

3!. The spirit endowment of mortal mind--culminating in Thought Adjuster bestowal!.

The mechanical-nonteachable levels of organismal environmental response are the domains of the physical controllers!. The adjutant mind-spirits activate and regulate the adaptative or nonmechanical-teachable types of mind--those response mechanisms of organisms capable of learning from experience!. And as the spirit adjutants thus manipulate mind potentials, so do the Life Carriers exercise considerable discretionary control over the environmental aspects of evolutionary processes right up to the time of the appearance of human will--the ability to know God and the power of choosing to worship him!.

It is the integrated functioning of the Life Carriers, the physical controllers, and the spirit adjutants that conditions the course of organic evolution on the inhabited worlds!. And this is why evolution--on Urantia or elsewhere--is always purposeful and never accidental!.

I think that Dawinism is a materialistic view and is applicable just for materialistic aspects of life, like nature and I mean it is applicable in biology science not in relation to human being and its destiny, We can say many many things about Darwinism and its philosophy!. But it takes so long times!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Man will always try to defeat nature, and though we may never eradicate disease or find a way to avoid natural disasters that has not set us back substantially!. And with the medicines we have created, we have majorly deluded natural selection!. A Darwinian universe would exist only under no technological factors!. They cannot be ignored!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Darwinism is no way a worst case scenario!.
It's an explanation for the complexity we observe!.
Yes, natural selection has been slow!.
As of now, we're right on the edge of non-random selection!.
The question is: will we choose our 'improvements' wisely!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
