It's been a few years since I last read Dialogs concerning Natural Religion, but as I recall Hume made two fundamental points:
1!. Even if true, the teleological argument does not imply the existence of a Judeo-christian-like god!. The universe might have been created by a committee of specialist deities, and/or have been abandoned by its maker(s) afterwords!. Even in its strongest form, the teleological argument cannot demonstrate that the creator is benevolent, omnipotent, omniscient, or even still in existence!.
2!. It is possible to conceive of even such highly ordered phenomena as the universe as arising through non-intelligent means!. Hume uses the analogy ofvegetative growth, but leaves this point somewhat vague!. Of course, after Darwin, evolution by natural selection would play the role of "non-intelligent designer" in modern thought!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
