Question: Is there a quality (e!.g!. Good and Evil) that exists and doesn't have an opposite !?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I'm not convinced that Good and Evil are opposites, as the concept is commonly used!.

I believe that Good is a positive quality, like light, and that as dark is simply the absence of light, Evil is simply the absence of Good!. Do you see the distinction!? Dark and Evil are not positive qualities in themselves, they are simply the lack of something else!. In distinction, for example, of left and right, up and down, sweet and sour!.

And further in that sense, I believe that just as there could be a universe with no darkness in it, composed of light, there could be a universe in which Good has overcome all evil, and exists only unto itself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Gravity!. So far, as much as science has tried - gravity appears to have no opposite force!. There is good and there is evil!. There is also absolute good (God), but God is so absolutely good, that there is no evil strong enough to be the complete antithesis of it!. Just as there is no darkness so absolute that a single candle flame cannot illuminate!.

I suggest you study entropy!. Oh, and accept the absolute love that God offers through His Son!. It would be selfish of me to leave that out!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most of the so-called opposites are really the opposites of being and non-being!. There isn't really 'dark', for example, just places where light does not exist!.

Which taps into an interesting philosophical query: is there anything which must necessarily exist and cannot possibly not-exist!? If there were, this would seem to fit the parameters of your question!. Unfortunately for both of us, I can't think of a thing to fit that bill (though there are a number of philosophers who have argued that the Divine does!.!.!. your mileage may vary)!. On the other hand, it would seem that there's any number of things which necessarily cannot exist so you might find some no-opposites there!.

The other kind of opposite refers to relative quantities!. More or less!. Tall or short!. And while it might seem as though a relative might always slide a little further, at certain points it would seem that the physical world would disagree!.

A good example is absolute zero!. It is simply not possible by any standard to make something colder than that!. And so the Kelvin temperature scale, with its zero at absolute zero, has no negative numbers at all!. 'Negative Kelvin' is something which simply cannot exist!.!.!. so all positive Kelvin numbers have no opposite at all!.

My take, for what it's worth!. Peace!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My knee jerk response to your question was no, but since I write about issues like this on my blog, I thought I'd better see if I am contradicting myself with a no answer!. If the divine can be considered qualitative then that might suffice as a quality without an opposite!. Anyway, heres what I found:

“I think I know what your boyfriend is talking about,” I replied!. “It’s kind of like what I believe!. Maybe Robert is right! Maybe he and I do believe in the same God!. The idea of ‘continuous creation’ completely changes the way we see things!. Mystics around the world tell us that if we could only see through ignorance, we would discover ultimate reality!. In fact, as we speak, it is as if we are being embraced by God!. We are simply a measure of that relationship, a communing relationship with God!. The bottom line is that we are not alone in the universe!. God fills every moment of existence, and that is true for both sides; God is there for us and we are there for God, -- the relationship is reciprocal!. The creator and creation unfolds simultaneously!. Nothing is separate!. Everything is interconnected!. I know this sounds strange, and it is strange, but seeing things in this light is not isolated to Jewish mysticism, the Sufis, the mystical arm of Islam, as well as other mystical traditions, understand divinity in a similar way!. You just have to give it time to sink in, that’s all!. Is this any help!?”Www@QuestionHome@Com

i think these are usually referred to as polarities, or contraries:

Good & Evil
Love & Hate
Hot & Cold
White & Black
Large & Small
East & West

at least for some of these, there are two definite ways to consider them: relative & absolute!. the first guy to answer described the absolute conception!. Evil is an absence of good, hate an absence of love, and cold of heat!.!. think of how in science temperature is never 'hot' or 'cold', its all measured in degrees and each degree is a measure of *heat*!.!.!. 100c is an amount of heat, and 0c is an amount of heat also (just a very small amount)!. everything you call hot and cold, is thought of in terms of heat!.!.!. the scale is a measure of heat!.!. everything you call 'hot' is an abundance of heat, and everything you call 'cold' is an absence or lack!. !.!.!.so there is no evil, just a lack of good!. there is no hate, just a lack of love!. and there is no coldness, just a lack of heat!.

the other way, is the relative conception!. most people think in terms of this one!. !.!.think of a number line!.!. positive numbers on the right, negative on the left and zero in the middle!. (-1)---(0)---(+1) !.!. you are zero!. what is positive is an abundance, and what is negative is an insufficiency!. whatever happens to fall at right about zero is neutral!.
so then!.!.!.!. (its kinda like a thermometer for good n evil, etc!.)

(-1)-----(0)-----(+1)
evil--neither--good
hate--apathy--love
cold--lukewarm--hot
white--grey--black
small--medium--large
west--center--east

*intuitively* it seems to most people that there is more to being evil than just not being very good (lacking a lot of goodness), there is a definate threshold being crossed once you stop being 'not good' and make a transition into what would rightly be called "evil"!.
if i cut u off in traffic, im an not being good!. if i flip u off in the process, then im really not being good at all!. but it doesnt seem fair to say i was being "evil" in the true sense of the word!. maybe i had to be somewhere, or maybe my wife was giving birth (although that still wouldnt excuse the fingure)!. suppose instead that i simply felt like driving my car head on right into yours, just so i could watch things blow up and hopefull hurt someone!.!.!. that seems more rightly called evil!.

the absolute conception doesnt seem to account for the transition from one to another, from good to bad!. this means that all tehre is to being good, is just not being evil!. but quite the opposite, there seems to be a lot more to being Good than just not being evil!.

is there more to being hot than just not being cold!? or is there more to loving someone than just not hating them a lot!? with the relative conception, because you take the place of zero, everything you asses is sensitive to your own perception!. when you say 'its cold', you are really saying 'its cold to me' instead of making an absolute claim like 'it is 15c'!.

the only 2 pairs that might not have opposites are existence (because non-existence!.!.isn't!.!. lol maybe) and circularity and squarness, unless they are opposites!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

we, as people, tend to identify with things by using extremes!. good!. bad!. love!. hate!. these are all words that try to express particular emotions!.!. but when you really look at it!.!. words don't do justice to the concepts that they are trying to portray!. what is good!? perfection!? bad!? life is not so simple!.!.!. the line between right and wrong is never clear because it's all subjective!. i'm sorry if i don't answer your question in the way i assume you intended but there is more to language than wordsWww@QuestionHome@Com

Interesting question,
I think both good and evil are extremes, and not the opposites, so i think most things don't actually have anything opposite of one and other!. What would be the opposite of a circle when both sides are the same!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would answer that consciousness is a quality and is unique!. I do not think that I have an opposite although I think I am a unique individual with a corresponding qualitative uniqueness!.

Www@QuestionHome@Com

By definition, no!. If there's an absolute, there also has to be the other absolute (good v evil, nothing v something, etc)!. This is how a diametric works, one can't exist without the other!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You can always use one or the other to your own advantage!.
But sometimes it doesn't always go you own way, but that's life, give or take your chances!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

creepy!.!.i don't think so O!.OWww@QuestionHome@Com
