I think in humans it is basically subconscious!. But lots of us can be conscious of our instincts!. Wanting food is an instinct!. Lots of us are aware of it!. As we are aware of other instincts we have but we do not have to be aware of them!. They lie underneath it all!. Over riding them takes conscious thought!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Instinct is housed in a part of the brain called the R Complex!.

R for Reptilian!. It controls all instinct, habit, ritualistic & survival behaviour & predates the old mamallian section of brain & neo cortex formed more recently in our evolution!.

Instinct comes from the subconscious it appears from nowhere!. If a child is about to fall instinct from the subconscious will make you try to save it!.

Conscience is known to you!. For example if you do something wrong your conscience tells you this!.
