Question: What do you think of Daniel Dennett's term 'bright' as a replacement for 'atheist'!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
In a logical sense, "bright" makes sense to contrast rationalists against those who believe in supernatural things without evidence and who, to put it gently, aren't very skilled in avoiding logical fallacies!. As an above answerer pointed out, it's also a nice reference to the Enlightenment, which put an end to the knowledge-hostile, superstitious theocratic Dark Ages!.

As a cultural phenomenon though, I don't think it will catch on!. It just sounds too PC and too condescending!. also since "brights" are in the minority, the majority won't appreciate the implication for what it means to be not-bright (i!.e!. dim)!.

It's already been used!.!.!.to be bright, or enlightened, can mean various degrees of intelligence, luminance or even ethnic color!.!.!.God forbid!. Let's not get to bright!.!.!.!.it dulls the senses!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's not very well thought out!. Perhaps "benighted" or "dull", "tarnished", "intellectually lazy" would be more to the pointWww@QuestionHome@Com

Sounds better!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
