A dialectic is a kind of oppositional style of consideration!. Two sides oppose each other to come to a kind of resolution between opposites, whether it's one side triumphing over another, both being destroyed, or a new third thing arising!. A political debate or most of the ancient Greek philosophical dialoges are not unlike different kinds of dialectic!.

Materialism is the philosophical viewpoint that the only important things are physical stuff that you can touch and manipulate!. To a materialist, ideas and values are only important in the way that they cause physical matter to be arranged; it's very common for a materialist to try and explain everything in this way!. Science, for example, is a very matierialistic discipline!.

Putting these two notions together, then, dialectical materialism is a way of explaining things as oppositions of material stuff!. Marxists are famous for this!.!.!. the dialectic they usually consider is the conflict between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'!. Dialectical Materialism is the philosophical basis of Marxism!. This term was first used in 1887 by Joseph Dietzgen!. Frederick Engels also used this term but called it "Materialist Dialectic" instead!. The term itself according to Marx is to do with the materialist conception of History and the material forces that cause social and economic changes!.
