Question: Christian Philosophy!?
Im just getting started studying philosophy, Im reading The Complete Idiots Guide to Philosophy, its actually a pretty good book!. I got it just because it discusses all the different types of philosophy and a brief history, etc!. Basically to me its an introduction to philosophy!.

It mentions though, that many Christian philosophers believed that we can learn about God from two "books!." The first book is the Bible and the second "book" is the world itself, which, if "read" in the right way, can yield divine knowledge!.

Can anyone tell me what it means to "read" the second book which is to read the world!. And how would it yield divine knowledge!. Thanks for any answers, and please dont diss me for getting the Idiots Guide to Philosophy, I didnt know what other book to get and this series of books have always been good to me by getting straight to the point and always easy for me to understand!. Thanks again!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well congratulations on looking!. Regardless of what book got you started!. "The Idiot's Guide to 'whatever'" are generic terms these days to get an individual started on a subject!. For all the title of the book is worth they could have simply entitled it "The Beginner's Guide to Philosophy"!. It would mean the same thing!.
Now then; Christianity is not a philosophy although many would want to call it that!. Christianity is "the way"; this term means that it is a way of life!. It has always been called "the way" from Abraham to Moses to the Christ!. The way is "the way of God"!. The term Christianity was never mentioned by the prophets nor the Christ Himself but is believed to have been coined in Antioch as that is the first time it was recorded!. Out of Antioch!.
The philosophies are not of men in these books, they originate from God and passed on to men!. (yes these things do happen but the faithless would mock that) However if you wish to study the morals and ethics of men !.!.!. then we are getting into philosophies okay!?
Now reading the world is simply observing the people who live around you!. Family, friends, strangers and acquaintances!. Observing them and seeing how they relate to the bible and the ethics of the law recorded there!. How they live accordingly and how they are living with or without the law!.
Hope things work out for you and I don't think you're an idiot!.
Have a good day and God bless!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think the idea of the world being a book even in a metaphorical sense is mere tripe!. Either that or I don't understand what is meant!. This may seem paranoid but I faintly suspect that the authors of that book might be trying put to words into the mouths of christian philosophers in general!. What it means to 'read' the 'second book' remains unclear to me, unless it's subjecting aspects of the world to logic and reason!. Sorry I wasn't of more help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For philosophy to have any value it must be applied to life, so that's a good reason for living in and observing the world!.

Metaphors point the way to truth and all metaphors are from the physical world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Without more context it is difficult to understand the direction and "Idiots Guides" are like Wikipedia!.!.!. not always the best BUT are a place to start often!.

I THINK it means that the Bible is first to see what it says about man, creation and our relationship to God!. Reading "the world" is looking at the evidence we see in peoples lives, the human lostness and in the creation itself!.

By "reading the world," I think it means using life's experiences and doing whatever else you can to arrive at whatever answers to life's great mysteries that will work for you!. From my own experiences, I have found that I can't find anything more wonderful, powerful or important that exists in our lives than love, and I feel like I'm still a beginner at finding out about this subject!. The fact that love is that powerful has led me in the direction of believing we have a meaning and purpose to our lives, and that speaks of a Supreme Being!. I'd like to commend you for your interest in philosophy, and I wish you the best in finding whatever spiritual and religious principles work for you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Psalm 19
For the director of music!. A psalm of David!.
1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands!.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge!.

3 There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard!. [a]

4 Their voice [b] goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world!.
In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,

5 which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course!.

6 It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is hidden from its heat!.

The earth is read by observing!. It can be read by a little child!. They start studying it as soon as they are born observing every thing and learning at phenomenal rates and when we observe them and say wow, this could in no way was my design!. We build stronger microscopes and keep discovering "smallness" is infinite!. We build bigger telescopes discover that "bigness"infinite!. We go deeper into the oceans and discover fantastic things that are so wondrous it takes the breath away!. Scientists say that we haven't even begun to "read"!.

We bought a small farm in the fall!. Spring came and I was enthralled by the beautiful tiny flowers in the meadow!. The blooms fell and by summer as I tried to walk barefoot across that meadow I discovered that the "fruit" formed after those lovely blooms were the most hideous piercing, painful stickers!. I "read " that and it said things like you can't tell a book by it's cover or things are not always what they seem!. When you observe nature carefully you are reading it!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Even though I wouldn't call myself a traditional Christian I have a strong belief in God!. The way I relate that sentence to myself would be to examine what feedback the world gives me on a day to day basis!. This is a reflection of your actions and beliefs!.
When you interpret what the world is giving you back you learn about your actions and beliefs and also what you need to learn/heal in order to return to wholeness!. Everyone needs to bring themselves into balance so that they will be a likeness to God!. Perfection = in balance!.
If you find someone annoys you, write down why they do and then when you reverse that and apply it to yourself and your actions and beliefs, you will see there is something you can learn from that situation!.
eg - something I witnessed the other day that shows how to read the world - A person made a big deal and complained to me that a visitor came to their house and was very rude and arrogant to them (The visitor was very wealthy)!.
If that person had been aware of how to read their world they would of taken a moment to examine their own behaviour and would of found that they too are arrogant because they think having a lot of money gives them special rights!. Then they could of learnt a relevant lesson that would of provided them with spiritual growth!.
That is how I read the world to help myself grow spiritually and continually aspire to becoming a spiritually balanced human being!.
The Divine IS giving us knowledge!
If you would like to know how that relates to you personally, I would be happy to consult with you!. Email me!.
Hope it helped!

Hi,

I'm a blue blooded full Roman Catholic of a high order!.!. I've worked in the church as well!.!. but am not overly religious these days!.

What i know about Christianity is this:

There are two key strains of catholicism which are often confused by other religions!.!. first there are the CATHOLICS who believe in forgiveness then there are the ANGLO/PRESBYTERIANS who believe in FEAR!.!. if you ever go to a presbytarian chruch reading on a Sunday as i have you will note the priest is telling the congregationb that they must never make a mistake or they will go to hell!.!. whereas if you go to a catholic procession you will note they always preach that one must forgive their sins and admoit them and learn from them!.!.

Notably!.!. the entire British empire was built by Presbytarian chrisitanity!.!. which is often confused with catholic christianity!.!. the fact is this!.!. Roman Catholic christians would never and have never driven the changes we've had on earth!.!. the pope gets blamed but the damage done to indeginous communitys globally was done by the Church of England and their philosophy of FEAR!.!. they FEARED the black man!.!. Roman catholics always happily worked with the black man!.!. though false historys in our education system dont actually tell all the facts and usually disguise Church of England hegimony by alligning themselves with all christians!.!. its not true!.!. Roman Catholics ABHORE what imperial christian England did to the worlds indeginous society!.!.

and it was their FEAR of others and judgments that those who are not like them are somehow less worthy, which is probably driving the world to the ground!.!. This is common among judaism and presbytarian chrsitanity!.!. but is in stark contrast to roman catholic beleifs but sadly!.!. the catholics get blamed for everything!.!. while the jews and presbytarians never get a mention!.!.

Modern society is run and dominated by the Judao/presbytarian philosophy of fear!.!. infact many advertisments use fear the news uses fear and even newspapers and media in general are always trying to scare us into reacting!.!. like the Iraq war!.!. which was completely based on unwarranted fears and some lies as well!.!. but at the core of it were the populations fears of Saddam and terrorism!.!. which was dictated to them by the presbytarian/judao controlled media througohut USA !.!. like i said!.!. go to a presbytarian church on a sunday!.!. you will hear the same FEAR being espoused througout the house of God!.!. Roman Catholics churchs would never do this!.!.

PS: Evangelism is linked to judao/presbytarian christianity too!.!. anciet roman catholics do believe in miracles and still do!. i had one happen to me as well!.!. i prayed and made a mini tumor disappear overnight!! EVEANGELISTS like Benny Hines who is Jewish and from Israel!.!. are only using fear and trying to milk money from uninfoprmed chrsitians!.!. but roman cotholics like me have zero regard for evangelists!.!. because miracles dont happen in public!.!. when my miracle happened!.!. i was a kid and a man wispered in my ear and said if i believed and never told anyone that it would go away!.!. next day it was gone !!Www@QuestionHome@Com
