When killing someone that is evil or that is committing an evil act that hurts other people or that restricts another's freedom!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Self-defense is the obvious answer!.

But!.!.!.!.I also think in extreme situations where you killing the person would actually be a merciful favor to them - for example!.!.!.!.a person is in a burning building, there are bars on the windows, they are 8 stories up!.!.!.they're on fire already and screaming in agony!. If there was absolutely NO chance of saving them and I had a gun I'd probably shoot them to save them from the pain of burning alive!. I would hope someone would have the same mercy on me!.

And I don't think this would be considered murder either - God knows the true intentions on a person's heart and under extreme cases like that I think it wouldn't be viewed as murder since you'd be helping them basically!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Self-defense is a given in my opinion, and I would define that as defending the welfare, lives, and in some circumstances, property of my family, friends, and those I love as well as my own!.

I also have to agree with Firefly about situations where killing might be more merciful than leaving someone to live in agony when death is imminent!. This is, of course, an opinion, and I realize that there are a huge number of variable moral and ethical dilemmas about when this would be truly justifiable and where boundary lines would be drawn!.

War!.!.!.this one has been a struggle for me for a long time!. I would define myself as a former pacifist, and this is one of the reasons I refer to myself as a "reformed idealist!."

I abhor war and everything it stands for, and in a perfect world, it simply would not exist!. However, my personal experiences in life and reality have lead me to believe that despite our best intentions, there are times when war is necessary!. Are innocent lives lost!? Absolutely!. Are people victimized by it!? Without a doubt!.

However, the sad reality is that there are people who for various reasons cannot, or will not, reason, discuss, or compromise!.

When an ideology or belief compels a group of people to commit terrorist acts, suicidal attacks, and torture, negotiation is ineffective and pointless!. Of course the attempt should be made, but realistically, once it has been established that the opposition has no interest in a resolution that involves anything less than the destruction of your way of life and belief system, you are faced with a choice to either fight or die!.

Unpleasant, yes!. Horrible, yes!. Necessary, unfortunately, also yes, in my opinion!.

It is easy to stand back from a situation and theorize how things "should be done," and certainly we have an obligation to attempt to resolve things peacefully whenever possible!. However, theories are just that, and plans do not always work as intended, particularly when traditions and beliefs are so deeply entrenched that anything outside them is considered an evil that must be eradicated!.

I don't think it's ever "OK" to kill someone, but in a case where someone is trying to kill ME and it's either my life or theirs, I would do what I had to do!.

And I don't agree with war so I don't think it's ok then either, but again!.!.!.!.if it's them or me, I'll do what I have to do to protect myself!.

the only situations in which it is ok to kill i would believe would be 1 if your life is in a situation where not other recourse is possible 2 when those who are important to you are threatended with death and 3 when it is necessary to the suvivablity of your lively hood Www@QuestionHome@Com

well looking at it from a philosophical point of view, you have to ask yourself what is the definition of right and wrong, and who decides the difference between right and wrong is it god is it society, and even so do either have the right to determine what is right or wrong!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

never is it ok!. we all feel revenge but we must control that and a lot of us do well with that!. but with the war thing, i really hate it!. ur killing someone you don't know!. the two could hav been best friends, but its all over being selfish and i guess thats wat hav we come to today!. "selfishness is more important than anything" - that is my quote of our current world!. it sucks and will it ever change!. why cant we hav war over a game of chess!? no lives are being lost, but i guess its too complicated to just play a game of chest!.
