You'll never know the answer!. None are alive to ask!. Only they knew the true answer to your question!. Of course, from the New Testament writer's perspective, it was one of the most important sermons Jesus ever gave!. But how important it was, we will just never know!.

You cannot know for sure what you cannot substantiate!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Then, he was one of dozens, if not hundreds of "messiahs" or preachers walking around preaching!. It wasn't that important!. While it may have been a sizable gathering (" his disciples and a large crowd"), ultimately, it was a small number of people that heard it!.

It's only importance now is the fact that Christianity caught on and became so popular!. If not for Constantine you'd probably would have never heard of the Sermon on the Mount!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There were not a lot of preachers back then!. Jesus was the only one who healed the infirmed!. Jesus had a following of His disciples and a great multitude!. His sermon on the mount was His best and final!. God transformed Him on the mount in front of just a few disciples along with letting them see 2 of the better prophets of old time!.
Main diff is back then it was Jesus' best!. Now days one would not be able to have such a multitude with that much true desire for healing in one area even like the mount!.

As important as it to us now, I believe it was more important to the people back then!. First, they didn't have a reference to use (the Bible) and reflect upon!. Second, Jesus had just arrived to tell the people something brand new, a concept that was different from what they knew!. They didn't hear the priests and leaders of their day speaking like Jesus did!. Jesus spoke to the people "as one who has authority"!. The people obviously needed Jesus!. They travelled from miles around and walked long distances to hear him speak!. The same way we would respond if we knew Jesus was here again - we would flock to him by the millions!. We know him!. The people in ancient times didn't recognize him at all!. If they did, they found it difficult to believe him!.

I love the term "money can't buy love or happiness"!. I disagree!. If I knew Jesus was coming to the city I live in, at one of our auditoriums to speak, I'd find a way to get tickets to see him (just short of robbing a bank)!. Money can buy love and happiness, if it is for the right reason!. Do you think the people of ancient times would have paid to hear the Sermon on the Mount!? They would have sold their children to see him if they knew what we know now!Www@QuestionHome@Com
