This is because it is derived from Greek mythology!. Nymphs were nature spirits - always female - who were often sought after for sexual purposes or involved in romances in those stories!.

Their analogue in myth is the satyr: a half-man half-goat who was equally legendary for being perpetually aroused (and yes, always male)!. So while only women can be nymphomaniacs, the same condition in men used to be called satyriasis, and that term would only be applied to men!.

These days both terms aren't in use by professionals any more, who prefer the non-gender-specific term 'hypersexuality' instead!. And your average comedian would joke that for most men the term would be redundant anyway!. So take your pick!. Heh!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I had a class mate and he kept telling me he is an nymphomaniac!.
I knew what he was saying so what ever is applied to woman doesn't necessarily stick just to woman!. You know I think this was popularized by the press or in some magazines, but as was stated the term hyper-sexuality makes a lot of sense!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because in men, this behavior for some reason is considered somewhat normal!. There are few social prohibitions for a man who sleeps around a lot!. There are however, mores for women in this regard that when violated can result in labeling the woman as a slut or a whore!. The man is viewed as a Casanova!. i da know!. for many years male doctors have tried to understand us but they never could!. also female sexuality has always been seen as something to be repressed!. it is like the double standard a guy with hundreds of partners is acceptable!. but a woman with the same amount is called horrible things and it is not acceptable!. so it is probably this double standard that created this word!. not that some people aren't addicted to sex and that is really all that a nymphomaniac is suffering from!. it is just an older word!. a guy with the same problem at the time when this word was probably created wasn't seen as having a problem until recently!.
