I would say -don't- think about the man!. The essay is on Heraclitus' ideas, right!? So write about his ideas!. Philosophy essays do not need to be written in any sort of fancy prose - you should simply put down your points and explain them clearly!. Don't say "Heraclitus, one of the most notable and revolutionary philosophers of the pre-Socratic era, dared to break with convention" when you could say "Heraclitus disagreed with many other pre-Socratic philosophers!." You'll want to say, The other pre-Socratics said XYZ (and maybe back that up with a quote), whereas Heraclitus said ABC (and maybe back that up with a quote)!. You could maybe clump certain areas of disagreement together!. I don't know much about the pre-Socratics, but if, say, you were writing about how Descartes disagreed with Hume, you could first talk about their views/arguments about God and religion, then about epistemology, then about ethics etc!.

Hope that helps!. The main things to remember with philosophy essays are:
1!. Always be clear!.
2!. Don't put in unnecessary information (e!.g!. "David Hume, the notorious Scottish empiricist!.!.!."), and DEFINITELY never put in false information (e!.g!. "David Hume, the notorious English rationalist)
3!. Make sure it's all grammatically correct!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
