I think primates have hope!. I've seen chimps on TV who get bounced out of their group when they do something bad, and they hang around the perimeter of their group waiting and hoping to be let back in as they mope around feeling sad and lonely!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think other creatures can feel hope but not always to the same level as humans!. Humans usually have more advanced hopes, since our basic needs are usually fulfilled!. However many other creatures may only be hoping for these basic needs to be fulfilled!. Of course, the more the intelligent the creature is, the more likely their hopes will be closer to human ones!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is the fruit of certain faithfulness in the mind that we call hope, signifying our human ability to expect things from beyond what we may be able to see through reason!. Hope therefore is a reason of its own, aside our faith nothing else is required for us to be hopeful!. This is ironic that we are more likely to be in need of hopefulness when we have little or nothing left!. However, hope is not all about what we may have in our heart in the hours of looming calamity or impending disaster, for that would be what I like to cal passive hope, as hope is also the virtue of a mind who has done all it could, and nearly nothing to that it should not, to ensure success for instance!. They say, ‘prepare for the worst and hope for the best’, and quite rightfully so, as in our preparations for the worst we take all the measures necessary to pave the way for certain state of hopefulness to prevail, where being hopeful in itself becomes a reward!.

The how is it only human to hope!? The answer is in the way our mind is, a construction capable of freewill and aided or guided by the reasons of knowledge and faith for in action!. We would not have any occupation with hope if we had not had an open mind, if we had nothing in the way of thought and freedom of action!. This is in a world where things of all sort happen for various reason, most of them entirely foreign to us, that we expect things to turn up the way we like them to turn up!. We think, plan, and make effort for certain specific purposes of our lives, and then we hope that our thoughts have been right, our plans accurate and our efforts effective to bear fruit of success, and there comes in the need for hope in our mind!.

A mind of an animal for instance is incapable of all this, of thinking and having any purpose beyond the dictates of their nature, they therefore by default are content with whatever they get, whichever the way their life, and circumstance of their environment return out to be!. The experience and observation inform us the nothing in the world but human mind would therefore entertain any thoughts, or emotions of hopefulness!. If we were to become completely passive, or develop a superhuman state of acceptance then, we too wouldn’t need hope to carry us further into life against life’s odds, trial and tribulations!. We would simply live as though we were not alive!.
