Yes, it is a confusing system, but centuries are named based on when they end!. So the 1800s would be the 19th century!. There is similar confusion on when centuries start, at the end of 1999 or the end of 2000, based on the fact that the Roman at the end of B!.C!. times started with the year 1 rather than the year 0!.
