He was one of the most important characters in the fight for rights and equality for black people in the USA!. But unlike Luther King, he sought to recuperate African roots and believed this were to be found in Islam!. He also considered that the strugle for freedom might require the use of violent means!.

In his early life, Malcolm X was kind of a low-life pimp and criminal!. Then he became Black Muslim - originally a follower of Elijah Muhammad who espoused a separatist black nationalist ideology, in which white people were considered "devils!." Elijah Muhammad's ideological heir is Luis Farrakhan (I'm not sure how much the ideology has evolved since then)!. Malcolm X became a great orator and community leader!.

Following his hajj and after meeting Islamic leaders of various races, Malcolm X adopted a more mainstream kind of Islam which espouses tolerance regardless of race!. He continued in strong advocacy for civil rights for black Americans - remember, he grew up in a time when lynchings of blacks weren't uncommon, segregation and all kinds of repressive discrimination was imposed on them, both legally and de-facto!.

If he hadn't been assassinated, he might have lead the congregation in a much more tolerant direction!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
