Question: Why do we care if there was water on Mars !?

Im intrigued with the drive of humans wanting to know if there was life on Mars or whether there is life in another galaxy!.!.!.!.

Why do we want to know that!.!.!.!?

I couldnt care less !

Isnt it better to spend all those billions on solving poverty or making sure everyone in the world has food & water !?

We have got our priorities totally mixed up !

Your question appears to be rhetorical in nature, and it appears to assume that life is a zero-sum game, which it isn't!. Whether or not there was ever water on Mars is just one of many data points in the question of life, and whether the Earth is unique (probably not, but proving it is out of our reach at the moment)!. And determining if there was ever water on Mars is not mutually exclusive with addressing poverty and access to resources!. Wisely managed, a space program benefits all aspects of society!.

That said, the current manned mission to Mars intiative is just another political stunt on Bush's part, one that compromises basic science programs that could benefit all, more (imnoho) - so it is not a black & white question, it's about being smart about getting smarter!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

While I understand your concern regarding the money spent and the need to solve poverty and famine in the world we live in, we look for water on Mars because life (as we understand it) MUST have water to survive!. Thus, if there is water on Mars, then there may be "life!." Now, if there is life, it may be simple (like bacteria) or complex and intelligent!. If it is the first, it could hold the cure to such things as cancer, AIDs, etc!. If it is the second, then it could KNOW the cure to such illnesses as well as know ways to reduce famine and poverty!.

We are simply gambling to see what turns up!. For all we know, it also could be intelligent and hostile, which means we need to know about it to prepare ourselves!. Knowledge is power and ignorance is often defeated!.

In short, we have not found answers on our own planet to many things--famine and poverty have exist since humans developed the notion of economy (trade values), so why not begin to look elsewhere!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

b/c finding water raises the chances of finding life!. You are correct that we have bigger issues here on earth!.

but the truth is we are ruining this planet faster then it can heal, andmaybe not now or in a 100 years, but perhaps in the next millium we are going to have to colonies other planets, mars is the most reasonable!.

if you are interested in other space projects look up the space elevator, once only science fiction, scientist are already looking into this and say construction can begin with in our life times!.

also how do you think other things like communication satalites, the hubble telescope, the space station came about!. Im sure 50 years ago, people said the same thing about going to the moon!. but think where humans would be with out cummication satalites!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think it is of any benefit to us right now, but if you care about the future of the human race, in a few generations time, when we have totally f~~~d up this planet, it is comforting to know that they would have somewhere to live for a couple of million years!.

The rate of decline is serious, more serious than we are told!.

So we can turn Mars into a planet suitable for humans! Then live there and populate it! Creating an atmosphere is easy we just want to know if it is possible!.
