That was Ben Franklin, and I agree!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I wouldn't say they don't deserve either!. But I would modify the statement to say, "People who are willing to sacrifice freedom for security will receive neither!." Historically, when people give up their freedoms more and more, civil unrest eventually ensues!.
SDR-4X: How would a freedomless totalitarian society stop unhappiness!? I, for one, would be very unhappy in a society that restricted my actions and speech, as would many other people!. It's just human psychology!. Sure, lots of technological progress would come about from that sort of society, but there are some who disagree with research being "the only thing that matters in the long run!." Some would argue that spiritual enlightenment matters, or that being truly happy and making others happy matters; if neither of these things have any value, then neither does scientific progress!. Consider this: if we all die eventually and all there is is natural phenomena, then scientific research and progress doesn't matter one iota!. It helps people who are sick, but that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things!.!.!. unless you assign it value!. And many people assign freedom a precious value, and would be unhappy without it as such!. So if subjective values matter, and the naturalist point of view is correct, then freedom matters!. If subjective values don't matter, then nothing matters!. And if the naturalist point of view isn't correct!.!.!. well we could endlessly speculate on that one!. You have fun in your brave new world, but count me out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
