Question: Can you paraphrase this quote by Thomas Merton on faith!?
Hi,
Can someone paraphrase this quote for me from Thomas Merton!?
"Our faith is given us not to see whether or not our neighbor is Christ but to recognize Christ in him and to help our love make both him and ourselves more fully Christ!."
This quote it from Disputed Questions, on Page 125 if you were curious about it!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

We should not look to our neighbor and wonder or not if he is good, but rather know that there is good in him and treat him as such so that both him, and you can become better people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you replace "Christ" with the idea that we are more than we can possibly imagine, you can come up with a relationship of respect for others as potentially greater than they or you could possibly know!. Merton was unfortunate to have to try to express the open door to humanity in a Christian framework!. This crippled his message!. But if you can strip the religious labels off you end up with one of the fundamental ideas that Jesus came up with, the idea that we are all far more than we could possibly imagine and should live our lives accordingly!. And then Jesus got killed and St!. Paul turned him into a God and really screwed up the message!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
