To answer your question don't we need to define what the self is!? I hold the self is defined, created, known by the stream of words we use when we think!. Our awareness in the beginning is like a dog's awareness!. We are aware of our environment but not aware of our awareness of awareness!. It is only later when we have start thinking completely in words that we become aware of our awareness, our self!. Now the self is more than just awareness of being aware but that type of awareness is only possible with a self that reflects on its own words!. As we grow up we express valuations of ourselves to ourselves that become, for lack of a better word, the unconscious!. The unconscious can be thought of as the sink hole of the self!. It's were all old thoughts, opinions, and expressed attitudes that we have verbalized to ourselves sits!. The self is build from the old language use of ourselves thinking about and evaluating ourselves!. The self is a bridge across time holding our current thoughts and the long forgotten thoughts of yesteryear and it only exists because of language!. So the self is more like a running stream than a static thing therefore when you talk to yourself it's still yourself; however, the stream may have changed it's course!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are three modes, or three distinctions, required for self-consciousness!. (1) The whole mind, as a subject, contemplates (2) the same whole mind as an object!. (3) The very same whole mind percieves that the contemplating subject (the mind) and the contemplated object (the mind) are one and the same essence, or being (the mind)!. In absence of any one of these three distinctions, the rational mind ceases to be rational, because it can no longer be self-knowing, self contemplating, or self-communing!. When we think to ourselves --- even when we have our little ''mental arguments'' --- we are communing with ourselves, and not with a seperate entity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Buddha provided a simple answer -- you are not your thoughts!. In fact, upon internal investigation, there is no inherantly existing "self" to be found!. It is quite possible to have thoughts arise that compete with other thoughts!. A person may somehow view this as a conflict of self vs!. self!. Strange, I know, but it's pretty easy to see when you pay attention!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Thas really deep!.

I think its different for every person!. With some people i think its like someone inside of them is making their decisions and spending time with them, while with others its just merely yourself just keeping things private, if you get what i mean!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My take is merely 'thinking out loud', not talking to a separate person!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
