Question: Is Plato's Republic ideologically repugnant!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
His republic just goes to show the different forms society can take, Yes his advocacy of dictatorship would seem to some repugnant!. He was quite biased of course, beibng a philosopher he believed philosophers should be king, we see the same today, Economists think they should be in charge (gordon brown) and Oil Barons (GW Bush) think they should be in charge!. All this is a far cry from democracy - the society fit for gods, if we had real democracy it would have been taken away from us a long time ago, all we have is an illusion that we call democracy, it is not real democracy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A theory may be right or wrong but to describe it as repugnant is loaded value judgment!. What repels one person may seem vary attractive to another!. Many people today think that they are as good as the next person even though they are many times removed as far as qualifications, abilities, ethically, spiritually, etc!., are concerned!. We think no one has the right to be our betters or masters!. There is no support for such an idea and Plato has a point when he (or Socrates) says that the Philosopher-King, who is morally, intellectually and in other ways superior, should rule over the rest of the populace!. Such an idea is surely not repugnant!. Hail to the True King!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think it is!. Of course, to moderns it would seem very limited, one sided and a bit, well, class snobbish!.
When reading anything that comes from any other time frame than our own, the reader has to be aware of and consider the people, place, customs, social mores, ethics, etc, of the writer!. Put into this perspective it is right in line with the time that Plato lived!. also, there are some rather revolutionary ideas contained within!. The effort of Plato to think beyond the scope of his own world was phenomenal, and if for no other reason should be admired as a work of farthinking!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
