Question: Is revenge ever ethical!?

When is revenge ever ethical!?
If you think it is never ethical, what makes it always wrong!?
What about the way it helps to make the person who is hurt by the initial action feel better!. Isn't it ethical to heal a pain, and if someone gets hurt by that, is it unethical if it is only their malicious intent that brought this about in the first place!?

Revenge is never ethical!.!.!.
1!. Just cos u have been hurt/ill treated etc, does not give you the right to do the same to that person- that would put you in the same category as the person who did that to you
2!. It is only ethical to heal a pain/ your pain as long as you dont hurt the rights/ feeling of others
3 There are many ways other than revenge to deal with hurt inflicted on you- provided you have the maturity to implement it!.!.!.
4!. Revenge only starts a cycle of unpleasant incidences which may later become irreversible, since others have been involved by then!.!. so isnt is easier to stop at the 1st step and forgive that person instead!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think that revenge can be ethical, but only in an extreme case where justice is not served!. For example, if someone cuts you off on a freeway, getting revenge is juvenile!. The person does not need to be punished for a minor infraction!. If, however, someone murders your child, then gets let off on some technicality in court, then I feel that revenge is justified, even if it is not legal!. There is a line that should be drawn that defines where a wrongdoing is so aggregious that the perpetrator MUST suffer punishment for their actions!. Where that line is drawn is debatable, although I don't think anyone would argue that unjustified murder, rape, etc!. would fall on the "punishable" side of the line!.

Sure, there will be people who say that "two wrongs don't make a right", but ultimately there MUST be a penalty for severe wrongdoings!. Not for any reason other than to maintain a balance of punishment and reward!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Whups! Wrong question!. Right and wrong have no bearing on ethics!. You can have a very "bad" set of ethics as easily as you can have a "good" set of ethics!. It all depends on what is culturally accepted!.

Revenge can be very ethical!. In the concept of Sicilian Vendetta, revenge is mandatory just as it is in the concept of Scottish "Kanly"!. It all depends on what the code calls for!.

In my personal code, only if a person is made the fool is "revenge" ethical!. They cannot be be made to appear the fool but must be proven to be a fool!. It is permitted only because illusion is destroyed and the real is made visible!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

But if someone takes from you, and you take back from him, that is redressing an imbalance, and that is just!. Usually revenge is considered unethical because the person who is trying to "get even" is usually not objective!. That is the difference between "justice" and "revenge"!.

An objective person (like a judge) will weigh all of the evidence, consider both sides, and come up with a punishment that is PROPORTIONAL to the wrong that was done!.

Usually when a person tries to get revenge, they are too emotional to be objective!. They will take a minor offense, blow it out of proportion, and they will treat the other person WORSE than what they deserve, which makes the other person want to get even back, and so on and on indefinitely!.

And there is also the fact that often the person who thinks that they were hurt & wants revenge is simply upset over a simple misunderstanding, or they get the wrong person!. An objective person who was not personally involved is more likely to see that!.

It is this inability for a person to be truly objective about something that they were personally involved in that makes revenge so dangerous!. If someone really did you wrong, there are usually ways to legally address the wrong that took place without you taking matters into your own hands!.

If the wrong that you suffered is so small that it isn't worth filing a lawsuit over, then maybe it is too small to worry about at all!. No one is perfect!. You will be happier overall, and have better relationships, if you would learn to just let minor things go!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
