To get to the heart of Hume’s philosophy you have know a bit about Locke’s philosophy, or the philosophy that inspired Hume!.

Our knowledge of reality, for Locke, came through the senses and their associations, and these sensations were secondary to the real world!. For Locke, everything sensed was a consequence of the interaction of material substance on the mental substance and mental substance was tabula rasa—blank slate!. But a contradiction arises here, the one pointed out by both Berkeley and Hume!. If everything that we can know about the world comes through the senses then it is the sense data that is real!. In other words, no knowledge of the real world can be had, only knowledge of our impressions of this world!. Again, if there is a material world we cannot know it with certainty because everything we do know about the “real world” comes to us via sensation!.

Immanuel Kant was inspired, after reading Hume, to develop his own philosophy that addressed the inadequacies of both Hume and Locke!. In addition to Kant, the philosophies of William James, Alfred North Whitehead, Henry Bergson, and the Gestalt psychologists—just to name a few, were also inspired by Hume!. These philosophers, taking the point of view of empiricism, took Hume to a higher level!. Hume's atomic sense data and their associations, are, they argued, only a part of a much larger aesthetic field, aesthetic continuum!. Experience is richer than Hume supposed and his atomic sense data indicates!. Hume's sense data is determinate for only the center of our perceptive field!. At the periphery of this field, sense awareness is fuzzy and indeterminate!. Indeed, on this level, one may discover an interest in the Buddha’s philosophy, one that takes Hume to an even higher level!. Hume was a very important philosopher!.
