It is only when people listen, are they able to be one in communication with the other person, in other words they are in their world!.
words are the medium of expressing our thoughts, along with the thoughts are the emotions!.
when u just hear the words, u are not in commune with the other person, when u can sense the thoughts and emotions expressed in those words you are Listening!.
hearing is great But LISTENING IS DIVINE!.!.!.!.

It depends on the topic and issue that is being talked about!.
If things that have you have no interest in or things that you feel have no relevancy,what you hear will most probably been discarded from your mind as soon as it goes into your ears!.
And it also depends on what type of conversation that you are engaging on,if it is something that you requires deep thinking then most people will listen to it(meaning process the information while giving some thoughts),this is especially true for debaters whereby they need to process information and come out with answers instantly!.

First of all,i shall define what you mean by listening that is processing whatever messages that you have heard or any conversations that you are engaging while hearing the words spoken are just the opposite!.

If it is things that has no meaning like people giving you some stupid preaching or whatever,i believe you will just hear the words or "sound of words"!.Another occasion whereby people merely hear the words are when you have no knowledge or whatever background that the other person is talking to you about e!.g sophisticated technical details of scientific terms or people giving critics on movies/debates/books/etc which you have not watched/read/seen would most probably of no interest to you and nothing would be retained in your memories!.
It also depends on your health status too,if your mind is full of headaches and no information can be absorbed anymore,you will be experiencing the latter!.I believed many have experienced such things during exams when you have a fever while discussing some concepts with your friends!.

Most people HEAR but they do not LISTEN, as any person working in a call center can tell you!. It's very common when a customer calls in, for them to say:

"I CAN TAKE YOUR ORDER NOW!.!.!. PLEASE GIVE THE ITEM NUMBER AND QUANTITY"!.!.!.

and the idiot on the phone says!.!.!. "Um!.!.!. I want Graper and Graber!.!.!. 3 of those and"!.!.!.

"WOULD YOU GIVE ME THE ITEM NUMBER, PLEASE!?" !.!.!.

"Oh!.!.!. um!.!.!. make that!.!.!. um 3"!.!.!. is that the ITEM NUMBER!?!.!.!. "um!.!.!. OH!.!.!. it's 78"!.!.!.
