Question: Is my Anthropology professor right, or my Religion professor on writing!?
My former Anthropology professor said "as long as you can be understood, it's writing, and England set up a bunch of strict rules is all!." He went to Chicago University, and is always in North Yemen building museums, and reading ancient hieroglyphs!. And he has is published in famous magazines!.

My religious professor says "English is everything, and students do not know their English, and it must be perfect!." And she went to Notre Dame, and reads Greek and Aramaic!.

I like the Anthropologists theory, and he knew every question I ever asked him, and any student ever asked him!.

Who do you think is correct!? My grammar isn't very good by the way, and I don't care!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am closer to the Anthropology professor statement "as long as you can be understood"!. Language in general is subject to evolution, new words, terms and uses are added on daily bases, the phrase "my bad" is not necessarily correct linguistically but it is heavily used , there are many other examples!.
The religious professor says "English is everything" is totally wrong, English nowadays is dominant due to the fact that it is the language of the super power but what if this fact shifted in a distant future say the Chinese become the super power, eventually their language would become the common language of earth!. there are many cultures on earth who lived for eons on this planet without recorded language (I mean grammar and writing) like the pacific islanders or some African countries and yet they managed to make themselves understood!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'd go for your Anthropology professor!.

It is by human nature and in it's mental capacity to automatically understand a sentence even if it's constructed incorrectly!. However, by wrong construction of some sentences, misunderstandings may occur!.!. Still, I had to agree with the Anthropologist's theory!.

English is totally not everything, it's just something that is important but when we don't say it/write it perfectly, doesn't mean we aren't understood!.

Your anthropology teacher seems wise!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think if you can't express yourself correctly than you will never win an argument, I mean you can bully the person I suppose into your way of thinking but that isn't using your head that is using your emotions!. So I will opt for your relgious prof and say get it right express your thoughts as best you can within the rules!.

It depends on the context!. The necessity for perfect form, spelling, grammar and punctuation varies depending on the purpose of the text, the intended audience, and the method of publication!.

So, they're both right!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Perhaps it is wisest and most beneficial to ones self and to all others to know how to employ any language to its fullest in correct form so as to be well able to be understood by as many others as possible!.

The most current and widely utilized rules of proper writing style were compiled in the United States and not England!.

It would not matter how many languages one may read or be able to write in if one should use them so poorly as to not be understood and many persons who compose incorrectly have been published as many persons, such as yourself, with their inflated ego and ideals of supposed personal importance fail to learn to use any language well!.

Be well and, please, strive to be wiser for your own benefit and the benefit of all others!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
