MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia must stake its claim to a slice of the Arctic's vast resources, the secretary of Russia's Security Council said on Friday at an unprecedented session of the council held on a desolate Arctic island!.

Russia, the world's second biggest oil exporter, is in a race with Canada, Denmark, Norway and the United States for control of the oil, gas and precious metals that would become more accessible if global warming shrinks the Arctic ice cap!.

When the west finally gets an energy source(s) that is not so depend on oil Russia will go back to being a nothing power!. The Soviet Union was at its apex during the 1970s, when oil was at an all time high, only to collapse by the end of 1980s, when the oil markets collapsed!. Hopefully either the oil markets will go through another 1980s in the next decade and/or we find an new energy source(s)!.

The geopolitics of our times shows that no one will really stop Russia in the short term!. Hopefully in the long-term the geo-markets will force a retreat from its authoritarian attitude!. As Marx said history repeats itself, first as a tragedy, second as a farce!. May the current Russian regime be the farce to the Soviet Union, that was the tragedy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
