The war described in the Iliad was part of the Trojan War, which took place during the 12th or 13th century BCE, and is regarded by historians as the last great event of a Mycenean culture of Greece!. According to legend, Paris, prince of Troy, abducted the beautiful wife of the Greek king Menelaus!. He and his brother, Agamemnon, led the Greek armies to Troy to retrieve her and destroy the city!. According to the "Odyssey," this battle lasted 10 years before the Greeks emerged victorious!.

The "Iliad" takes place during the 9th year!. During battles with Trojan allies, the soldiers claimed captured women as concubines!. Agamemnon's woman's father was a priest who called upon the gods to restore his daughter to him!. Furious at his loss, Agamemnon took the women given to Achilles!. As a Achilles was one of the greatest warrior and Agamemnon never personally ventured into battle, Achilles was insulted and refused to fight in battle!.

As Achilles was one of the most feared warriors, his friend, Patroclus, borrowed his armor to scare the Trojans!. Paris brother, Hector, killed Patroclus and claimed the armor for himself!. To avenge his friend, Achilles challenged Hector to one-on-one combat!. He killed Hector, tied the body to his chariot, and mutilated the corpse by dragging it around city walls of Troy!. He wished to leave the body to rot in the fields, but Agamemnon refused this to him, allowing the Trojans to recover the body to give Hector a proper burial!.

Achilles returned to battle after the event!. Soon after, Paris shot him in the ankle, his only weak spot, with a poisoned arrow, killing him!. The "Iliad" ends with his funeral!.

According to the "Odyssey," the Trojan War ended not longer after this!. The Greek tactician Odysseus had the army build a giant wooden horse that the Greek army hid within!. The Trojans accepted it as a gift and brought it into the city walls!.
