Maybe Eric Berne's "Transactional Analysis" will help you understand the structuring of time in pauses such as the type you bring up!. During a conversation there are rituals and pastimes structured in to fill the gaps between moments in conversations!. Some people are not comfortable if they are not in some pastime or ritual even when the logic has been objectified and there really is no reason to hash over it again!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, I really love the ebb and flow of conversation that doesn't motor on at some ridiculous non-stop pace!. I think we need to respect the silences and accomodate them in a relaxed and laidback manner!. I love being with people who don't feel the need to talk non-stop too!. It's wonderful to have friends who know how to enjoy silence together, just as well as chatter and laughter!. They all have their place!.

Unfortunately I do know people like those you speak of though, who rush to say anything at the faintest hint of *shock* a thoughtful pause!Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, I have a good friend who often pauses in conversation (as do I)!. A mutual friend said that he enjoyed watching the machinations of our brains as we sought to come up with the proper words to convey what we wanted to say!. It's a bit disconcerting when people don't have the patience to wait for me to finish my thought & blurt out something which is not part of that thought -though at times it's helpful when someone interjects a word which is along the lines of what I was thinking (usually that happens with family members)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

yeah haha, especially me,
being so random,
but i think it's my random thoughts
that can start another conversation, then i
forget about the silence lol!.
say something randomley, it's fun,
and it keeps you from feeling weird!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Silence is is very uncomfortable and anxiety provoking for some people!. Many people interpret it to mean a variety of things which are often not true!. The "babbling" effect is typical to avoid any silence of any length!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yep! Everytime there's a long pause, I know, there's discomfort!.!.So more often than not, I', usually the one coming up w/ something dumb, like mentioning something around the house or something!.

No body likes pauses during conversations!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Everyone does this!. The key is to find someone you feel comfortable enough wih where those long pauses don't need to be interrupted!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you mean an awkward pause!?
yeah it kinda makes me feel weird
like i have to talk!.

All the time!. There is a finite number of people I feel truly comfortable being silent with!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
