This is a misnomer, really, since Darwin was talking about physical survival of species!.

However, in our society - or any society - it is definitely true that the people most able to adapt or use the norms of a society to their advantage succeed!. And I'm not only talking about money and material possessions, but that is certainly one measure of success!. So, there is something to it!.

BUT, and it's a big but, "social Darwinism" should not be used to dismiss our obligation to employ remedies to help those who cannot help themselves, or who just need a more even playing field!. What separates us as human beings is our altruism!. Although it has been demonstrated in other species, we humans are the only ones who have made and can make substantive changes to our own culture so that everyone can survive!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you read Hitler's Mein Kampf you will find as perfect an example of social darwinism as you will ever encounter!. In it Hitler says that by the middle of the 20th century large swaths of the world will be starving (which occurred,) and that only those whose society was innurred to violence and death could survive!. He looked at German history and mythology and said the German's were the best candidates to be the most brutal and insensitive culture!. This, not beauty or strength, was the reason Hitler called the Germans the master race!.

If darwinism is the only answer and Malthus is correct then Hitler is right!. I personally believe that science makes a very bad religion and even worse social policy!.
