Question: What pushes someone over into fundamentalism!?
What pushes people over the edge towards fundamentalism!? Why to people go from being a "believer" and "follower" of a certain doctrine into being hell bent on making everyone else believe it!. Why do people think its ok to eradicate all those who don't hold the same train of thought!? Why do people feel THAT strongly about religion!? Www@QuestionHome@Com

You ask a magnificent question!.

People are drawn to fundamentalism because they want to belong to something bigger than themselves!.

It starts with a belief in a small thing that grows bigger with encouragement from others!. One wants to belong!.

People make you believe that you are a precious gift and that to honor God you must be a precious gift!.

And then the brain washing begins!.

They feel that strongly about religion because it makes them feel a part of something bigger!. And people want to feel bigger!. So big that they forget about mercy!.

Funny mentalists insist that you agree or you die and go to hell!.

Jesus, Mohammad, Buddah, Moses or any other large figure in religion doesn't insist on sending all non believers to hell!.

Certain followers of Mohammad, Buddah, Moses and Jesus become fixated with their desire to make everyone they meet a believer, and if you don't believe like they do then you are going to hell!.

Of course, this is lunancy!.

God, the God of everyone, is not concerned with rules!. God is concerned with love, mercy and compassion!.

In fundamentalism there is no compassion, little love and no mercy!.

Fundamentalism has less to do with God than it has to do with pride of self righteousness!.

Many people are uncomfortable with complexity and ambiguity;they seek simple answers to all of life's challenges because they lack the intellectual and emotional strength to face them as they arise!. I think that in the case of the "believer" the individual is able to pursue his faith and be true to his(or her) sense of reason!. The more unstable individual not only needs to have a belief system which explains it all and puts himself in a position of control-he needs to eliminate the possibility that he might be wrong by getting rid of other belief systems!. His God is weak and cannot hold up to any question or doubt because in this case God is just the fanatic's own ego written large!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's not ignorance, but fear!. People who are so dogmatic are coming from a stance of fear!. They don't really believe that God is able to make everything come out right!. They've got their ego engaged and are trying to force their way, rather than God's, onto everyone else!. This, by the way, is NOT God's way!. God's way is love and gentleness!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Indoctrination uses ordinary peoples beliefs in their deity to avenge the wrongs usually done to them by their own leaders and blamed on a common enemy not necessary different religion and force them to take refuge in a friendly nation where after a few years they begin to undermine that nation!.Thank you for the chunnel!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Oh, I wish I knew!. Modern Evangelicalism is a phenomenon that took root when the push was on to become "born again!."

Being "born again" is a nice thing to be if once you strayed!. But formalizing it was not part of the deal Jesus made by being the martyr!. His martyrdom was supposed to allow everyone into heaven!. All one had to do was admit his sins, even if it was only in his own heart on his death bed, because there might not be anyone else around him when that time came!.

But I believe that once a person takes the leap into becoming "born again," they can't let themselves be seen as backing down from that!. So their evangelical fervor become stronger, in order to prove to their fellows that their belief is real!.

Muslims have a similar manner of demonstrating their "fidelity" to Allah!. Not all "infidels" are people who are not Muslim!. As a matter of fact, "infidel" applies first to any Muslim who does not comply with "shura," which is public opinion in the extreme, and the basis for Islamic law called "sharia!." If we are not careful in this country, we may become prey to a Christian form of "sharia!." I believe we are already under attact by a form of Christian "shura!."

I think it's a psychological need for structure -- the desire to just "know" and not have to think!.
I was raised by someone who thought that "nobody really knows anything, everybody is just guessing"!.
The need to "know" is powerful!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Fear of the unknown and ignorance!.
They want an answer to things that they don't know and the religions they decide to believe give them the answers they want!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
