Question: Can you be in poverty and still be philosophical!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Of course, one can be philosophical while one is in a state of poverty!. Socrates is, of course, the perfect example of a poor philosopher!. That being said, however, as Aristotle noted, philosophy requires luxury!. Meaning like most things philosophy is more easily done if one does not need to worry about the mundune things of life!. A gifted few can be in poverty and still have a rich philosophical inner mental life but most will not!. The saddest thing thing about poverty is that most of time it leads to a poverty of thinking, a poverty of the soul!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think that the two go hand in hand!. The poorer you are-the more philosophical you can be!. People cannot always have power over their money affairs but they can always have power over their mind!. Right now, I am not making as much money as I want to be making but I do have time to think and study and be philosophical!. I try to go to websites that will expand my mind and make me more aware of the things going on around me!. There is one web site that I just love to go to when I think that I am surrounded by non-thinking people!. It takes my fears away and lets me know that there are real, thinking people out there!.
also, most sages are hermit -like and in that manner they are most philosophical!. Not rich, but wise!. Peace out and have a great day!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Poverty is a state of mind!. Philosophy can help you transcend it

28And why take ye thought for raiment!? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these!.

30Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith!?

31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat!? or, What shall we drink!? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed!?

32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things!.

33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Of course you can, to be philosophical has nothing to do with poverty,it is more of a mind set than anything else! There are many people that are intelligent and are not well off! It could be circumstances or situations that prevent a person from getting out of a rut! Cheers!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, although philosophy is undeniably a luxury, I cannot imagine that an intelligent, logical human being who was impoverished by some odd twist of fate would cease to have deep, intelligent thoughts!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

MAHATMA GANDHI

(you have to define poverty!. but anyways, Gandhi chose to live that sense of poverty within and without)
