If you have contempt for someone, you still have A feeling towards them, rather than NO feeling!. Being completely ambivalent to a person- not caring in anyway, no contempt no love- would, in my opinion, be the best gauge of your feelings toward him/her!. Not meaning that you wish for bad things to happen to him/her, or that you would not feel bad if something bad did happen!. Just meaning their actions and life course no longer effect your life!. It is present in every relationship; but it can become destructive when hate overcomes love; at this point its like a job you just dont want to go to anymore: its over, move on!. You really only need a small amount of love to go with any amount of contempt to really "stay together"; as most couples tolerate each other and staying married for many years!.
