To be chill in the face of any adversity, and especially in the face of desperation (yours or theirs), is next to the most important thing in life!. Maybe the most important thing would be to know, from the beginning, that what you actually are, is also to know complete fearlessness!. What you actually are is the very essence of impersonal fearlessness!. The "me" fears extinction, but you are not that me or that ego/personality!. With this understanding and with the love that is pure being, what to do next is a no-brainer in any situation!. Knowing this is ultimate change within!.
