Question: Is it true that the desire to feel compassion for someone also implies a secret desire to see them suffering!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
On one hand, yes, because compassion is by definition a reaction to the pain of another!. But the way your question is worded, there are two possible exceptions:

1!. They may be already suffering, but you are unable to feel compassion!. Your desire then is not to see them suffer but for you to feel compassion!.

2!. It doesn't have to be secret!.

Interesting: There is a strange emotional disorder called Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy (I am not making this up) in which you actually secretly cause sickness in another so you can be the one to help them get better!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. You don't yearn to feel compassion!. To yearn or desire is an aggregate that deals with the egoself!. To have compassion is to have the selflessness that quickens the awaken soul to alleviate the suffering of another and bear it as his own as to lighten the load of another!. Sometimes we have to suffer in order to learn things, much like gold that needs to be tempered by fire to shed impurities!.

To fully understand truth is easy but hard to comprehend, but even so truth will always be like a beacon in turbulent sea!. It is constant and always knowing that suffering much like everything is temporal!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is true that within desire or grasping there is suffering!. You may be aware of your effect on someones mental state however, you are not responsible for their mental state!. If they can see without desire or grasping they will not suffer!.

Compassion on the other hand "sees" the reality in the impermanence of everything and holds all sentient beings with the kindness that a mother has for a child!.

all beauty and truth is impermanent!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Usually compassion arises when seeing another suffering already!. You feel for their plight!. Most people do not express any feeling of compassion at another winning the lottery or going through a happy experience!. Compassion is the emotional expression of shared suffering as part of the human condition!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
